Launched on Aug 9, 2016, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is an online portal where a number of sellers offer products or services from which buyers (i.e. government agencies and departments) can choose based on their criteria. The Ministry of Finance has made GeM purchases by government users mandatory by adding a new Rule No. 149 to the General Financial Rules, 2017. GeM aims to improve transparency and efficiency in public procurement. This platform enabled a competitive pricing structure and aimed at reducing the cost of government procurement.   Previously, the procurement system was quite inefficient, but now almost everything required by government departments and public sector undertakings is available on GeM, from computers to taxis for hire and office furniture.
